New tainted milk scandal in China

High levels of aflatoxin M1 have been found in a batch of milk before release for sales by China Mengniu Dairy Group and created a new scare, following the contamination of milk with melamine in 2008.

Different media report aflatoxin M1 levels twice or 140 times higher than allowed. The contamination was discovered by the Chinese Administration of Quality Supervision, not by the producing company. The company has apologized to the public, but Chinese bloggers and commentators have reacted angrily, regardless.

Mildewed feed was said to be the source of contamination. This seems plausible and points one more time at the importance of safe feed for the production of safe food.
